8 things to check
before you pick any host
Most small business web hosting looks the same on the plan card. The differences sit in the answers to these questions, so ask them of anyone you are considering. Here are ours.
What will I pay when it renews?
A lot of cheap hosting is an introductory rate that needs a multi-year prepay, then renews at several times the price. The renewal price is the one you'll be paying for years.
Ours: there's no intro rate. After your first month you pay the standard price shown on this page, with no higher rate waiting at the end of a term. If we ever raise published prices, our terms give you at least 30 days' notice, applying from your next renewal.
How many email addresses do I get?
Some plans cap mailboxes at one or five, and some push you to a per-user email suite for each person you hire.
Ours: unlimited addresses on every plan, 10GB each, with webmail, forwarders and spam filtering. They work in Outlook, Apple Mail, Gmail and on your phone.
How long are backups kept, and who restores them?
“Backups included” can mean one weekly copy that only support can restore, for a fee.
Ours: backups run every day and are kept for 30 days. You restore from them yourself in the control panel, and if a restore ever gives you trouble, we'll help.
What security comes as standard?
A hacked site can take your email down with it and land you on spam blacklists. Security sold as an add-on often doesn't get bought.
Ours: free SSL that renews itself, a web application firewall, a malware scanner and DDoS protection. Each site runs in its own container, so a compromised site on the same server can't reach yours.
Who moves my current site?
Many hosts hand you a plugin and a help article, or charge per site to do it for you.
Ours: our team does it for free, including files, databases and mailboxes. Most moves finish the same day, and live traffic only switches when you say so.
Where is my customers' data stored?
If your site or inbox holds customer details, you're the data controller under UK GDPR and need to know where that data sits.
Ours: choose the London region and your websites, databases, backups and mailboxes are stored in the UK. Our data processing agreement covers every customer, with nothing to sign.
What happens if the site goes down?
An “uptime guarantee” with no remedy attached is a target, not a guarantee.
Ours: a 99.99% monthly uptime SLA in our terms. Miss it and we credit your account 10%, 25% or 50% of that month's fee, depending on how far we missed.
Who answers when something breaks?
Email stops arriving on a Sunday night. You want a person who'll look at the logs, not a chatbot linking you to an article.
Ours: our UK team answers live chat and tickets 24/7, and checks mail logs, SPF, DKIM and blacklists for you. The phone line is for sales, Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm.

Most small business websites run well on good shared hosting with fast servers, SSL, daily backups and business email. You don't need an expensive VPS or dedicated server. A brochure site or WordPress site runs fine on an entry plan, while online shops and busier sites benefit from the extra CPU and memory on a larger plan.
Compare the renewal price, not the first-term price. Many hosts advertise an intro rate that needs a multi-year prepay or jumps after the first year. When we checked the cheapest plans at five hosts selling in the UK, they renewed at between £7 and £10 a month, so roughly £84 to £120 a year (see the comparison). Our plans run from £47.88 to £163.08 a year paid annually, with no intro rate to expire and no VAT added. Budget separately for a domain: a .co.uk is £7.99 a year with us.
Mostly it's a label. What matters for a business is what the plan includes: enough email addresses for your team, backups you can restore, a guarantee with a remedy attached, and support that answers when something breaks.
